A Beautiful Baby Shower

This weekend Kyria and I had our first baby shower!  It was beautiful!  Two of my best friends put the whole thing together, and they did an amazing job!  It was creative, sweet, and personalized!  I can't express my appreciation enough!  Seriously, my friend Jeri is finishing up teaching school, teaching Zumba classes (ones she took over for me!), has a little 2 year old boy and husband to take care of, is busy trying to bring in additional income for next year when she stays at home, and somehow she managed to plan and put together this spectacular shower for me!  My friend Erin also amazes me! She will be leaving in 5 days for language school and a 3 month mission trip to Guatemala!  In addition to preparing for this trip, she is teaching school, and trying to spend time with everyone before she leaves! She is so creative, and really did a fantastic job getting everything together!   I don't know how they did it, but I am so blessed to have such awesome friends! Not only were these two girls fabulous, all the ladies that came really made the day special!  Here are some pics:

  The girls had somewhat of a strawberry theme going . . .  with yummy strawberry cake, chocolate dipped strawberries, and this tasty punch, Erin made it both gorgeous and delicious!

Jeri made these awesome tissue flowers as decorations!  Now I get to use them for Kyria's room!

All the ladies brought an article of baby clothing, and we used the buttons and fabric paint to add a personal touch to Kyria's outfits! :)  Such a clever idea!  Thanks Erin!

Naming Children: Kyria Brighten

Lately everyone has been asking me how to pronounce Kyria.  It is pronounced; (kEEr-EE-ah) . . . or like Syria, but with a "K"!  Several people have also asked us where we came up with her name, and what it means.  Skyler and I believe it is important to name children on purpose.  Instead of naming simply because we like the sound, we want our children's names to have meaning.  A person will become what they are called.  We want our children to live up to their names!  More importantly, living AFG (All For God), encompasses every area of our life . . . this includes naming our children.  We prayed about and discussed Kyria's name long before a decision was made. 

"Kyria" is a Greek word meaning, "noble, honored, chosen lady".  It comes from 2 John, where he addresses his letter to "Kyria".  "Brighten" means just that - to illuminate, become bright, or make cheerful.  The verse we chose to go along with this name is 2 Corinthians 4:6; "For God, who said, 'Let light shine out of darkness, made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ." ~ 2 Corinthians 4:6.  We also like Matt 5:16 as well! 

I have played around with a photo editor to create the following picture for Kyria's room.  I probably need to fix the formatting a bit before printing and framing this for her room, but I'll give you all a sneak peak!


Now hopefully the ultrasound technician was right about our baby being a girl! . . . but if not, we have a boy name picked out too!! :)

This Week's Menu Plan & Simple Recipes

This year has been incredibly busy for Skyler and I both.  Unfortunately, this has not been real good for our diet.  No, we haven't been eating fast food everyday or anything . . . but I also haven't been very good at planning our meals.  Fortunately, school and my work at the studio is wrapping up, and I am excited about prioritizing our menu!  For now, I am getting a head start by forming a menu with several simple recipes!   Here is a look at our weekly menu, and a few recipes can be found at the end :) The items with an "*" have a recipe listed below! Enjoy!

NOTE:  We usually make double portions of our dinner meals, and freeze them to use for a later date.  
This is a great solution for busy days!  

Recipes:

Pina Colada Smoothie
 Ingredients:
4 oz plain yogurt
8 oz coconut milk
1-2 farm fresh eggs
1 T extra virgin coconut oil
1 T unheated honey
1 T flax seed oil (optional)
1 Cup fresh pineapple pieces
1 banana sliced

Directions:  Mix all ingredients in a blender. If you would like your smoothie to be cold, add some ice to the blender as well!  Makes 2 large or 4 small smoothies.

Tuna Salad
Ingredients:
Mayonnaise (as much as your preference desires!)
1-2 cans Tuna
1-2 Boiled Eggs, sliced and diced
1 T Dill Pickle Relish (or to taste)

Directions:  As you can see this recipe is really all about your preferences.  I like to use 1 can of tuna, and 2 hard boiled eggs with a few scoops of mayo, and about 1 T of relish.  However, your family might like a completely different combination.  It is really easy to adjust, simply take a few taste tests as you make it! :)  Serve on bread as a sandwich, with crackers, or over salad.  

French Fries
Ingredients:
Potatoes
Coconut Oil
Sea Salt

Directions: This is a great, healthy, variation of french fries!  Preheat over to 450 degree F.  Slice potatoes into fries; the thickness will depend on your preference.  Cover fries with coconut oil - I usually put some coconut oil into my hands grab some fries and slather them with the oil between my hands.  Salt according to your preference.  Cook in over for about 30 minutes.  Check on them every now and then, and flip fries if necessary.

7 Layer Dip
Ingredients: 

-2 Cans Refried Beans (Of course it would be better to make these,and I bet there is a great crockpot recipe that would be fast! I just bought mine from a can this time :S)
-Guacamole (I did make this! Recipe can be found below)
-1 small container of Sour Cream
-2 Handfuls Cut Green Salad (I used an organic spinach mix this time - I think this is a great way to get extra greens in our diet!)
-2 Cups Salsa (Again, homemade is best, but I just bought a natural salsa from the store this time!)
-2 Cups Shredded Cheese
-Top with diced tomatoes and black olives (optional)

Directions:  In the exact order from above ingredients, layer in a 9x13" pan. Chill prior to serving. Eat with Tortilla Chips.

NOTE:  We use this as one of our meatless meals for the week, but it traditionally makes a great dip to bring to a party!

Simply Delicious Guacamole

Ingredients:

- 2-3 Avocados - mashed
- 1 tomato - diced
- 1/2 cup diced onion
- squirt of lime juice - optional
- salt to taste

Directions:  Once avocados have been mashed, mix in tomatoes and onions.  Add juice from lime, and salt to taste preference.   

NOTE:  I was never a fan of guacamole, and even now I am pretty picky when it comes to the recipes I like.  This recipe is a simple one I threw together one day, and we love it!  It is our favorite.  Nothing fancy, just simple and yummy! 

Salmon Croquettes
 Ingredients:
2 cans of salmon (preferably wild Alaskan salmon)
2 free-range eggs
1 cup of bread crumbs or crackers
1/2 cup onion minced
2 cloves of minced garlic, or 1/2 tsp. garlic powder
2 T mustard (whichever flavor you prefer)
sea salt and ground pepper to taste

Directions:  Drain salmon, and mix in a bowl with eggs, bread crumbs, and seasonings.  Preheat cast iron skillet and add butter. Shape salmon with hands into patties.  Place in skillet and cook half way through, then flip and cook on the other side.  Both sides should be browned and slightly crispy! 

I hope you like the recipes!  Cooking is more of an art for me, and less of a science.  Most of these recipes have been simplified from more complex recipes I have come across.  When our schedules are busy it's nice to have a handful of simple recipes!  I have written these recipes out for you, but to be honest . . .these are so simple I don't use a recipe card.  I just go off common sense and taste buds!   I recommend you do the same, and create some simple recipes your family will love! :)

Preparing For Birth With Scripture

So we are now almost 31 weeks along in our pregnancy!  That means 9 more weeks left (give or take), until I undergo what I've been told will be the most painful experience in my life thus far!  Yikes!  That's scary!  I broke my left humerus bone in college while snow boarding, and that was pretty painful!  Apparently, giving birth will be much worse!  Ow!  Of course, this should come as no surprise . . . God tells us in His Word that, as a consequence of sin, women will have increased pain in childbirth.  Unlike most pain, which tells us something is wrong, this pain is not a result of any sickness or disease.  It is simply a natural part of life, and He will bring us through it if we trust Him!

So, I've been reading a couple books on childbirth: 1) The Christian Woman's Guide to Childbirth by Debra Evans and 2) The Bradley Method.  I am hoping to gain insight into labor and learn a little about what to expect throughout the whole process.  The thing I am learning most, however, is that I cannot do this without the Lord!  I could easily to be overwhelmed with fear and anxiety thinking of all the things that could potentially go wrong.  However, I know this fear is not from the Lord.  Therefore, I need to start preparing my mind now; filling it up with the truth of God, so that I can be prepared for the task set before me.  I am completely depending on Him to give me strength and peace!

For this reason, I have put together a list of Bible verses (have you noticed I'm a little Scripture happy right now! :), that will prepare my heart and mind in these last couple months leading up to the big day.  These verses will also be good to have at the hospital with me as I go through the process of giving birth to little miss Kyria!  I hope this compilation will help many of you as well!

"Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things. Family Spirit: A Crest


Ready for some more FaMiLy SpIrIt!?  Today I thought I would share our family crest with you!  Skyler designed this prior to our marriage! After looking up a few traditional coats of arms, Skyler decided our family should have one that represented our faith in God.   He spent quite some time contemplating what should be on our crest, and what verses went along with each symbol.   Much like the motto, our crest is a reminder of who we are as a family, and what we stand for!

As with many coat of arms,  Skyler and I have had our crest printed on shirts, blankets, sports towels, etc.  We also had a flag made to fly proud over our homestead!

You will find numerous verses for each symbol on our crest below!  These verses are especially meaningful to us, and even though there seems to be a lot, I am sure we could have come up with even more!  As I typed these out for this post, I was reminded of how powerful Scripture is!  These verses are a few of the ones we hope our family will meditate on.  What better way to memorize and think on these verses than to look at our family crest!  We hope that having a symbol associated with a verse will help seal the truth in our hearts, and whenever we look at the crest we can't help but reflect on God's Word!

As I mentioned at the beginning, that's a lot of Scripture!  I love it!  Please know that this post has primarily been for our family.  I figured this would be a great place to catalogue our crest, and the Bible verses that go along with it!  I hope this post has also inspired you to think about the possibility of creating your own family crest!  How fun would it be to work together on this with your children!? 

What are your thoughts on creating a family crest?  Perhaps you already have a coat of arms that has been in your family for years!  I would love to hear your ideas on how you plan to/already do incorporate this into your family!   

PS Lest you think this type of family project would be scoffed at by older children . . . 1) Skyler came up with this, and we had a blast working on it together as adults with no children whatsoever 2) Skyler had his high school students (juniors and seniors) create a coat of arms that represented who they are, and they "ate it up"!  :)  Don't underestimate the amount of fun families can have by working together!

Family Spirit: A Motto

We've got spirit, yes we do! We've got spirit, how 'bout you!?

I'm sure you've heard of having team spirit and school spirit, but what about family spirit!?  With Kyria on the way, Skyler and I have been inspired to think about ways we can promote family love, unity, encouragement, and fun as our homestead continues to bLoSsOm with children! 

Children and adults alike find motivation in being part of something bigger than themselves!  Nearly everyone is a fan . . . perhaps for a sports team, musical artist, celebrity, etc. etc.  We have all been wired for community! Of course, first and foremost we want our children to embrace their role in the Kingdom of God!  After that, we pray every member of our family will know they play an integral part and are an asset to the team . . . Team Powers!

In order to promote this kind of family unity, Skyler and I have decided to get some things rolling prior to Kyria's arrival! Skyler actually started this process before we were ever married!  We already have a family motto, as well as a family crest!  In addition to these, we are excited about thinking through and creating a family mission statement, family traditions, family catechisms, and perhaps a long-term generational plan that will encourage our family for years to come!

So let's start with our family motto:

All For God (AFG) has been my husbands personal charge since he was in Jr. High.  As he is the leader of our home, it is only appropriate that we would adopt this motto for our family. This motto encompasses so much, and it encourages and reminds us that EVERY area of our life (family, home, work, play, relationships, education, talents, abilities, fitness, etc.) is for His glory! The phrase comes from the following Bible verses:

"So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God." 
~ 1 Corinthians 10:31

"And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him." ~ Colossians 3:17 

"Trust in the LORD with all your heart
   and lean not on your own understanding;
 in all your ways submit to him,
   and he will make your paths straight.
 Do not be wise in your own eyes;
   fear the LORD and shun evil." ~ Proverbs 3:5-7


One way Skyler and I currently use this motto is when we close a letter or sign our name.  It is a reminder, not only to us, but also to those we communicate with, of what our family stands for. 

Another fun way we use this family motto is by creating a logo:


Skyler came up with this design a few years back for the polo's his groomsmen wore in our wedding.  Since then, he has had several custom shirts made with this logo!  It is fun to wear our family motto as opposed to buying a name brand shirt,and voting to support what that particular company stands for.  This logo can also be found around our house! Whether it's printed on our egg cartons, stamped on our weekly menu plan, or written on chalkboard, it is a constant reminder of what are family is all about!

Finally, we created a handshake/pound that includes chanting, "A.F.G, Huh!"  :)  I know!  We are silly, and slightly ridiculous, but our kids will LOVE it! 

So are you ready to create your own family motto!?

Here are a few suggestions . . .

- Make the motto meaningful to your family.  Think about your favorite Bible verses.  In fact, if you haven't already, come up with at least three verses that you feel are especially meaningful to your family.   Do you see a repetitive theme? 
- Your motto should be brief; no more than one line.  We will talk more about this in a future post, but perhaps your motto can be a phrase from your mission statement!  The family motto should be similar to a rallying cry or chant that can be used as a quick reminder!
- Do you have an artist in the family?  Have him or her design a special logo for your motto!  If no one in your family has a flair for art, perhaps you could ask a friend or extended family member to create something for you!  Remember, the logo can be incredibly simple!
- Finally, be creative and have fun!  Get the whole family involved, and see what kind of ideas everyone can come up with! Skyler and I like using the "team" analogy for our family (hence the sporty logo, chant, etc.)!  We have known other families that have use "tribe", "clan", "dynasty", etc.  Use whatever suits your family best, and incorporate your motto/logo to fit whatever you choose!!

Sunday Sweetness: 10,000 Reasons

Today, there was a movement of the Holy Spirit at our place of fellowship!  Our pastor encouraged us to get in tune with the Lord; to spend less time talking, and more time focusing on Christ! It was wonderful!  One of the songs we sang was 10,000 Reasons!  Wow!  What a powerful song!  Here are the lyrics:

So in the midst of our worship, we focused on Jesus . . . raising up holy hands to our Savior, bowing in reverence to the King of Kings, and to the right of the room many were led to write out their reasons for praising our Lord on a wall dedicated to glorifying Him!  It was powerful, it was wonderful, and we are on our way to 10,000 reasons!  
 
Here are a few reasons I reflected on today . . . of course there are so many more! 
 
*The way He created marriage to be a beautiful picture of His love for the Church, and how my husband shows me this everyday!  PRAISE!
*The blessing of babies, and new life! . . . specifically our little Kyria, but also all the babies that will soon be blessing our fellowship! PRAISE!
*The way God can take the yuck of the world, and turn it into something beautiful!  For example, decay and fertilizer producing a vibrant garden . . . us, dead in our sin, being transformed and given abundant life! PRAISE!

This past week I went through all my music, and did a little "spring cleaning"!  The past few months, I have been convicted to get rid of several songs.  Maybe I am just getting old; maybe not watching TV has recovered my desensitization; maybe Kyria has caused me to rethink some of my choices?  No matter what the reason, I have definitely felt God's prodding in this area of my life.  After talking with Skyler about it, he agreed that it would be wise to get rid of any songs that are not glorifying to God.  After all, isn't that what the arts are really supposed to be about!?  Isn't the purpose of music, art, dance, etc.  to glorify God!?  If this isn't accomplished what is the point?
 
Don't get me wrong, I do not think music must be "Christian" in order to glorify God.  I have the taste for a variety of music -  from classical to hip hop, country to rock, oldies to pop, contemporary worship songs to hymns!  I love it all!  My criteria for glorifying God with music is that the song is positive, uplifting, and/or expresses raw emotion that allows me to think on "whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy" (Phil. 4:8). Sometimes that means the song simpy has a fun beat, and the lyrics are decent!
 
To be quite honest, I didn't have as many songs to clear out as I expected!  There were several songs I would consider fun and completely glorifying to God - even if they may not be considered "Christian".  However, there were others that I apparently never fully listened to!  The lyrics were disgusting!  Sure the song might have had a catchy rhythm, but the words were absolutely NOT glorifying to God!  I am a little ashamed to even admit that I owned these songs!  Yikes!

Most of the songs I had to get rid of were hip hop/pop songs that I knew didn't have the greatest message, but for the longest time I didn't think it was a big deal to keep them as long as I didn't listen to them all the time.  The beat is so fun, and I used to tell myself that once I was married these songs would be just fine! HA!  Now that I am married, these songs thoroughly gross me out!  Seriously, the lyrics pervert sex and completely degrade women!  I am so thankful that I have an amazing husband who cherishes me and treats me with respect and adoration as opposed to a piece of meat!
 
So all that being said, now that I have cleaned out some of my music, I am planning to purchase some new songs very soon!  I want to find some really great Christian songs in a variety of genres.  I listen to Christian radio often, but sometimes the best songs are ones you don't hear on the radio!  Can I get an Amen?!

I have many others, but to be honest my "favorite list" is running a little low because I've listened to all of them so much!  In fact, I've used some of my fun Christian songs for Zumba this year, and to be honest I am ready for some new ones!  
 
If you wouldn't mind . . .  I would love to have each of you reading this share a few of your favorite songs as well as the artists who sing them!  Let's try to get a nice variety - hymns, hip hop, classical, contemporary etc.  Although, songs can be glorifying to God without be labeled "Christian", I would like to keep this list to Christian artists only.  I know there are some really great Christian songs and artists out there, in a variety of genres, that many of us don't even know about!   Perhaps by compiling this list together we can help one another get excited about glorifying God through our favorite music!  Thanks to everyone in advanced! :)
