Naming Children: Kyria Brighten

Lately everyone has been asking me how to pronounce Kyria.  It is pronounced; (kEEr-EE-ah) . . . or like Syria, but with a "K"!  Several people have also asked us where we came up with her name, and what it means.  Skyler and I believe it is important to name children on purpose.  Instead of naming simply because we like the sound, we want our children's names to have meaning.  A person will become what they are called.  We want our children to live up to their names!  More importantly, living AFG (All For God), encompasses every area of our life . . . this includes naming our children.  We prayed about and discussed Kyria's name long before a decision was made.

"Kyria" is a Greek word meaning, "noble, honored, chosen lady".  It comes from 2 John, where he addresses his letter to "Kyria".  "Brighten" means just that - to illuminate, become bright, or make cheerful.  The verse we chose to go along with this name is 2 Corinthians 4:6; "For God, who said, 'Let light shine out of darkness, made his light shine in our hearts to give us the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ." ~ 2 Corinthians 4:6.  We also like Matt 5:16 as well!

I have played around with a photo editor to create the following picture for Kyria's room.  I probably need to fix the formatting a bit before printing and framing this for her room, but I'll give you all a sneak peak!

Now hopefully the ultrasound technician was right about our baby being a girl! . . . but if not, we have a boy name picked out too!! :)

Do you know what your name means? What are some of your favorite baby names, and their meaning?  How did you decide to name your child(ren)?

  1. I am glad you posted this because I have totally been saying her name wrong! LOL
Love the picture for her room. I was wondering if you were going to incorporate those verses in her nursery. Very awesome!

  2. My husband and I chose 3 names for each gender (since we were going to be surprised). Our names were all biblical in origin, and just waited until we saw our little one to name her. We decided on Zoe Joy for our little girl. Zoe is the Greek word for life. We pray she will bring Joy to our lives *(she already has filled these past three months with joy) and that her life will be filled with joy.

Love the name for your little girl!

  3. The name you picked out is so unique and beautiful! I love names with meaning and purpose behind them. I am very partial to family names, especially in honor of someone that was very special to you.

  4. I'm also glad you posted the pronunciation, because I was saying it wrong too. :D
I did not name our first, since she's technically my step-daughter, but for the other four my only stipulation was that the name not be ordinary. Having one of the all-time, most popular names (I speak from experience) means you turn around a lot when people are not addressing you, so I wanted my children to avoid that. I wasn't saved when I had my first, and didn't think about it with the others, so I didn't put much emphasis on name meanings. Our fourth child was named for two of her grandmothers, though her fist name is a derivative of her grandmother's name (to avoid the whole, common name thing).

  5. Hi Megan,

I love the names you have chosen. And it's wonderful that you are giving a testimony through her naming as well. Plus a headstart for Kyria on living All for God! Simply great. My name is Elyane, which comes from the prophet Eliyah, which means: Yahweh is my God. I think this is fascinating because my mom is not a Christian and I got saved almost 8 years ago. Don't we serve an awesome God!
